Paint and Architectural Colour

Paint and Colour in Historic Buildings

Welcome to the Home Page of Patrick Baty

PAPERS AND PAINTS LIMITED
I run a long-established family business that specialises in all aspects of house paint and architectural colour. My main interest, however, is in the paints and colours used in buildings of the last three hundred years.

Services we offer:

1) Guidance in the selection of paint colours
2) Preparing specifications
3) Colour matching of samples brought to us
4) Colour matching on client's own premises with a portable spectrophotometer
5) Technical analysis of historic decorative schemes
6) Consultancy on the decoration of historic buildings
7) Compilation of commercial paint ranges

CONSULTANCY
During the last ten years I have been employed as a consultant on over one hundred projects in Grade 1 and 2* listed buildings throughout the United Kingdom. A number of projects have also been carried out in the United States. Projects have ranged from the giving of advice on the appropriate paint colours for buildings of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, to a full technical analysis of the painted decoration in order to establish the original/earlier colour schemes.

LECTURING
As well as consulting on the subject, Patrick Baty lectures widely on aspects of paint, colour, historic decoration, and conservation issues. Audiences are mainly academic and professional, and he has spoken across the United Kingdom, in Europe, and along the East Coast of the United States.

In recent years I have supervised a number of post graduate students at British and European universities.

WRITING
I have produced annotated bibliographies for the Victorian Society and for English Heritage, as well as contributing information from my unpublished analysis of 18th and 19th century house-painting manuals. I have also published a number of articles (which are listed below) and contributed to, and revised, several books on colour and decoration, including Paint Magic, Colour in Decoration, Regency Style, Adam Style, Palladian Style, and The Georgian Group Guide to the Georgian House.
